Initially, the Institute's name was Science College, Jorhat. It was established in the year 1971, as a Degree Science College with Courses in Major Science subjects namely Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. It was renamed in the as Jorhat Institute of Jorhat Insititute of Science and Technology, in the year 2008 with the Introduction of B.Sc. IT, Engineering Courses in PEI and ETC and two more branches in Civil and Mechanical Engineering from the academic Session 2016-17. M.Sc. and PhD courses are also introduced from the academic session: 2016 -17
